The Nursery Division is Horace Mann School's early-childhood program, housed on the Upper East Side (Carnegie Hill) in the former carriage house of the Carnegie estate at 55 East 90th Street, a separate campus from the main K-12 school in Riverdale. About 144 children ages 3 to 5 attend across Threes, Pre-Kindergarten and three Kindergarten classes, with a 6:1 student-teacher ratio. The nonsectarian, coeducational program follows a child-centered, Reggio Emilia-inspired emergent curriculum and uses the Yale RULER framework for social-emotional learning. After Kindergarten, children continue on to Horace Mann's Lower Division and the school's K-12 continuum.

Culture & Community
Child-centered, emergent early-childhood curriculum inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach: faculty describe themselves as researchers who watch children at play and build daily life around the children's abilities and interests, viewing the child as an active, competent learner. The program balances literacy, math, science, music and movement, with specialists in science, literacy, library, studio (art), music, movement and chess. Social-emotional learning is delivered through a partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and its RULER program (recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing and regulating emotions).
