Stephen Gaynor School is an independent, nonsectarian special-education school on the Upper West Side serving roughly 400 bright children ages 3-14 (Pre-K through 8th grade) who have language-based learning differences such as dyslexia. Founded in 1962, it delivers highly individualized, evidence-based, multisensory instruction (Orton-Gillingham) with a 3:1 student-teacher ratio. Admissions are rolling and need-blind, with more than $2.5 million in need-based financial assistance awarded annually. A dedicated Placement Office guides 8th-grade graduates into a wide range of independent, specialized, public, and boarding high schools.
