LREI (The Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School) is a coed, secular, progressive independent school in Greenwich Village, founded in 1921 as one of New York City's first progressive schools to test John Dewey's educational ideas. It spans Pre-K (the 4s) through Grade 12 across two campuses, with an inquiry-based, hands-on curriculum and a longstanding commitment to social justice and diversity. Students continue internally from the Little Red School House (Lower and Middle) into Elisabeth Irwin High School. LREI is accredited by NYSAIS and is a member of NAIS, ISAAGNY, and New York Interschool, with one of the largest financial aid budgets among NYC peer schools.

Progressive / Play Based

Progressive, developmental-interaction / experiential education. Founded in 1921 as one of NYC's first progressive schools to test the educational principles of John Dewey. Secular. Inquiry-based, hands-on learning with a strong commitment to social justice and diversity; students construct understanding through fieldwork, project-based study, and authentic inquiry across social studies, reading, writing, math, science, world language, and the arts.
