The Madison Playgroup, founded in 1980 by Susan Beatus, is one of New York City's original and best-known 2's programs, serving as many children's very first school experience. Children who turn two between April and November attend in small groups for 90-minute sessions, three or four days a week, with three teachers for every eight children. The play-based approach centers on making school a happy, safe place where toddlers learn to function in a group, use words to solve problems, and share. A one-year introduction to nursery school, it feeds families into the wider NYC preschool/nursery admissions process.
